Beautiful Gardens of Kentucky

Kentucky is famous for its horses, basketball and bourbon, buts its gardens have never received much attention ... until now. This project of love was three years in the making. While I began by garden design business in New York City, I remain proud of my Kentucky roots and believe that Kentucky - the Bluegrass state - is home to some of the most enchanting and inspired gardens in the world. I've teamed with photographers and publishers Christopher Hirsheimer (co-founder of Saveur magazine) and Melissa Hamiltion of Canal House Publishing to create a portrait of 21 private and public outdoor spaces in Kentucky. Some are urban, others suburban or rural, and the designs - some of which are my own - are distinguished as they are seductive. From Henry Clay's historic Ashland estate to the Graddy family's quintessential Kentucky farmstead, Welcome Hall, their photos capture the beauty and tranquility of these landscapes and leave you feeling as if you're literally walking though them yourself. Gardens were photographed in every season. And for each garden, I tell the story of each garden and introduce you to the people who brought them to life. Enjoy Kentucky ..... Jon Carloftis
